Discrete trial training is one of the applied behavior analysis strategies. This type of training breaks down complex skills into simple "discrete" sub-skills. According to studies, training with separate attempts is an effective strategy with children with autism spectrum disorder, because the skills that the child learns are simple and thus provide him with many opportunities to learn. In addition, the specialist offers training sessions with separate attempts individually (one specialist and one child) to meet all the needs of the child.

DTT is a structured ABA technique that breaks down skills into small, "discrete" components. Discrete trials are regarded as an effective teaching method for children with autism because each trial is short therefore many teaching trials can be completed allowing for numerous learning opportunities.

Further, the DTT method of one-to-one teaching allows the program to be completely individualized for the needs of each child.
